How to Care for Teak Furniture

Home

Caring for Teak Furniture to keep it looking its very best is easy.   It only needs a touch-up every few years, when the original finish is applied correctly.

Apply Marine Spar Varnish following the instructions under Finishing.  If any mold or mildew forms on any part of the furniture, clean the furniture with water with a small amount of household bleach added.

Teak Oil and Danish Oil are not the best products for finishing Teak outdoor furniture, despite what many teak furniture companies advise.  Old oxidized oil creates dark brown spots on teak.  Linseed oil reacts with water and black blotches appear. Many of these products are not specific on the label as to the type of oil in the product.  Using these finishes will require cleaning, sanding and re-oiling several times a year, depending on the weather conditions in your area.

Finish your furniture like the professionals!  Boat owners will most often use Marine Spar Varnish.  Finishing with Marine Spar Varnish provides a durable, but flexible, finish.  The flexibility allows the finish to adjust to expanding or contracting of the wood in various weather conditions.  For application instructions, visit Finishing Outdoor Furniture on this site.
